Speedo, the international swimwear manufacturer, were promoting their latest range and had decided to occupy a large promotional area in the sports department of Harrods.
Office Twelve, a creative agency, had developed a vision of turning the space into a swimming pool. They wanted a water feature so we provided three bubble walls which made up part of the central feature.
The overnight installation proved to be incredibly challenging with a number of unexpected obstacles being placed in our way.
Other than our area, all the light in the store had been turned off so we had to make our way through the shop in darkness. The lifts were also all shut down so we had to carry the very heavy equipment up four flights of stairs. So, after a particularly difficult install which lasted into the very early hours, we left, planning to return in one month to remove the products.
What we hadn’t anticipated and had never experienced before was the very high in-store temperature which caused the water in the wall to evaporate very quickly.
Unfortunately there was no technical solution that would reduce the evaporation. The air conditioning was turned off at night in the store and we believed most of the water was being lost at night.
In order to maintain the desired look of the premium installation we had to send in one of our crew every three days to physically top up the water level.
Luckily, we had a crew living locally in London who lived nearby who could complete the task without too much cost, but we had to do what was required to maintain the quality of the product.
The overall response to the installation was very positive, receiving glowing feedback. The general public were also clearly attracted to the area, as we witnessed people stopping by to take pictures of it upon each of our visits to the store.
Speedo saw great uplifts and repeated the installation with a slightly different design two years later.
