1.      Janet Jackson’s ‘wardrobe malfunction’

Risqué and revealing outfits always grab people’s attention – but Janet Jackson’s accidental flash of a nipple at the 2004 NFL Super Bowl wasn’t quite what her stylist had in mind. While performing with Justin Timberlake, the superstar diva’s bustier slipped open in front of millions watching live and on TV. It resulted in a $550,000 fine for the broadcaster, CBS.

2.      Beyonce gets her hair caught in a fan

When she stepped onstage in Montreal, Beyonce never imagined she’d have fan trouble. As it turned out, the fan was of the mechanical kind, and the trouble involved getting her hair caught in the mechanism as she performed. Ever the trouper, she kept on singing while security guards came to her aid. The star later posted some reworked lyrics on Instagram, including the line: “Gravity can’t begin to pull me out of the fan again.”

3.      Ozzy Osbourne turns in an ‘offal’ performance

Heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne has always courted controversy, and during his time in the band Black Sabbath he was famed for biting the head off a bat. If you think that’s bad, you wouldn’t have wanted to be in his audience during the 1981 Diary of a Madman tour, when he was performing solo. During the tour he habitually launched raw meat into the audience in a catapult. One night, though, he had his comeuppance: instead of reaching the onlookers in the crowd, the meat instead landed on his own head.

4.      Kanye West makes a Swift entrance

Award shows are notorious for high-running emotions – but most celebrities manage to keep their feelings largely in check. Not so Kanye West at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Incensed by Taylor Swift’s win, he stormed on and grabbed the mic to rant at the injustice of Swift’s win over Beyonce.

5.      Miley Cyrus’ twerking routine

Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus performed together at the 2013 MTV Awards, in a show that would become legendary for sexually provocative content. Formerly a child star famous for Hannah Montana, Miley’s twerking routine ensured that she’d be remembered for an altogether more adult role.
